Despite recurring attacks of malaria from his high school days at Lonoke, and through his career at Georgia Tech, Hamm set National and Olympic records (1928-Amsterdam) in the long jump (26 ft.). In high school he won the state long jump 3 years straight, the 220 yd dash 3 yrs; and the 100 yd dash twice. Only two Lonoke competitors, Hamm & Hubert Davis, showed up for a high school invitational meet at the U. of Ark. They beat out Little Rock, 42-40. "The Atlanta Journal" called him "the South's 1st world champion in any sport." He died in 1981.
